Privacy: a guide for teachers

What to know before setting speaking homework.

Last updated 8 September 2026

This guide is for teachers taking part in the Cantora beta. It summarises the Privacy Policy for setting and reviewing speaking homework.

Your account and homework

We use your email address, optional name and assignment details to manage your account and provide homework reports.

If you tell us your school, we store it. We never contact your school. School names come from the Department for Education’s Get Information About Schools register (Open Government Licence v3).

Students use a link you share and enter their first name. They do not need an account or an email address. Your report shows the name entered, written answers and results for the homework you set, including whether an answer was flagged as abusive. Audio recordings are not included in the report.

How spoken answers are processed

We use specialist speech and AI providers to transcribe spoken answers, assess pronunciation and produce feedback. Some processing takes place in the United States.

Cantora does not save audio recordings in its database. Our conversation transcription provider may retain recordings and voice data for up to three years after we stop working with them. Reading aloud audio is not retained by its speech provider after assessment.

Students’ answers are not used to train AI models. The Privacy Policy also explains how long answers as text sent for feedback may be kept.

Before setting homework

Read the Privacy Policy and make the student guide available to your class. Discuss alternatives with students who have concerns about recording their voice.

Keep your account details private. Share homework links only with your own classes, and do not post them publicly. Cantora is intended for GCSE learners and is not for children under 13.

Deleting information

Homework remains available until it is deleted. You can delete an assignment from your dashboard, which removes the associated student attempts.

To close your account and delete the homework and student attempts linked to your account, email privacy@cantora.co.uk. Separate practice results, feedback ratings and provider-held records are described in the Privacy Policy.

Students and teachers can contact the same address to request a copy of personal information, ask for corrections or request deletion. The Privacy Policy explains these rights and when someone can ask us to limit or stop using personal information.
