Privacy Policy

Students

We process spoken and typed answers, pronunciation results and activity progress to provide practice, marks and feedback. For homework, we save the name the student provides, their written answers and their results so their teacher can review the work. We ask students for their first name only. Students do not need an account or an email address.

Teachers

We collect an email address, an optional name and details of the homework set. We use this information to manage teacher accounts, deliver account emails and provide homework reports.

Feedback and service improvement

When someone rates a piece of feedback, we save the rating, any comment they add and the feedback being rated, which may quote parts of a student’s answer. We use these records to review and improve feedback quality.

We also collect technical information, such as pages visited, activities completed, reports of technical faults and your device’s internet address. We use it to understand and improve the service and to keep it secure. The internet address is stored in a scrambled form that does not reveal the address itself. Spoken and typed answers are excluded from usage analytics, error reports and application logs.

A teacher can see the homework records of students completing an assignment they set.

We use specialist providers for speech and feedback: ElevenLabs turns spoken answers into text, Microsoft Azure AI Speech assesses Reading aloud, and Anthropic generates automated marks and feedback from answers as text.

We also use providers to host Cantora, store accounts and practice records, deliver account emails, understand service usage and monitor technical faults. Usage analytics and error reports do not include spoken or typed answers.

Some information is processed outside the United Kingdom. Conversation recordings and answers submitted for automated feedback are processed in the United States; Reading aloud recordings are assessed in the United Kingdom.

Recordings and automated feedback

Cantora does not save audio recordings in its database. ElevenLabs may retain conversation recordings and voice data for up to three years after Cantora stops working with ElevenLabs. Microsoft does not retain Reading aloud recordings after assessment.

Anthropic normally deletes submitted text and generated feedback within 30 days. If Anthropic’s own safety systems flag an interaction, the text and feedback may be kept for up to two years. Information may also be retained where required by law.

Homework and practice records

Homework records are kept until the assignment or teacher account is deleted, so teachers can review progress across attempts. Deleting an assignment removes its associated student attempts. Teachers can request account closure at privacy@cantora.co.uk.

For practice outside homework, progress is saved in the browser. Reading aloud results are also saved by Cantora without a student name attached. Feedback ratings and comments are stored separately from homework records. Deleting homework does not itself remove these separate records or information held by speech and feedback providers.

• We do not sell personal information or show advertisements.
• Students’ answers are not used to train AI models.
• We do not record users’ screens or use session replay.
• We do not use voices to identify people.

Cookies and browser storage keep teachers signed in, remember practice preferences and previously entered homework names, and connect practice results to the browser used. Usage analytics also use cookies. We do not use advertising cookies or advertising trackers.

Requesting, correcting or deleting information

Students and teachers can email privacy@cantora.co.uk to request a copy of their personal information, ask us to correct inaccurate information or request deletion.

In certain circumstances, students and teachers can also request that we suspend further use of their personal information. Contact privacy@cantora.co.uk.

Objecting to how personal information is used

Students and teachers may also have the right to object to how we use their personal information. Email privacy@cantora.co.uk explaining the concern. We will explain whether we can stop using the personal information for the purpose concerned and the reasons for our decision.

Help with a request or complaint

For requests about homework, include the name the student provided and enough information about the teacher or assignment to help us find the work. We may need further details to verify a request.

Students and teachers also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator.

This policy covers the current beta, open to teachers and their students. The service’s data protection impact assessment is not yet complete. We will update this policy as our use of personal information changes; the date above shows the latest revision.
